Tell us about the apprenticeship scheme you are on?

I have just completed my Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship, with an opportunity to continue onto a Level 2 Team Member Apprenticeship at The Ritz London.

Where did you first find out about the apprenticeship scheme?

At the previous hotel I worked at, I was introduced to my apprenticeship scheme which was operated by Umbrella Training, so this is how I was introduced to the company and my apprenticeship.

What was the process of getting on to the apprenticeship scheme, from initial enquires through to being selected for the scheme?

The process was mainly interviews after they had received my CV and covering letter. I had an interview with the Department Manager, the HR Manager and the General Manager. This was the same process at my previous hotel, and now The Ritz.

Tell us about your experience so far as an apprentice?

My experience as an apprentice so far has been extremely rewarding. I have been able to work with some of the most well known managers in the industry. I have been fortunate enough to work alongside many talented individuals who I have been able to gain skills from. We have a very good team at reception and this has really benefited my career so far.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to be able to stay at The Ritz for the foreseeable future. However, I would like to also do some travelling and to experience various different cultures which will also improve my speaking skills and skills within hospitality. I would like to train as a Butler, as well as experiencing Concierge. As this will give me general knowledge about most departments within a hotel, which will eventually mean I am able to choose what I would like to do, as I would be trained in most areas.

Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship and why?

I would recommend doing an apprenticeship because it means you are able to learn whilst also getting paid so to me, it’s a no brainer if you know which area of work you would like to go into. It’s also beneficial to your CV and to future employers because it shows you have learnt both theory and practical work within hospitality. Especially, if you are fortunate enough to be able to begin your career at a young age in the ‘luxury London market’ of some of the best hotels in the world.

Would you recommend young people to attend Skills London and why?

I would recommend that young people attend Skills London because it gives you exposure to people who have been through what you may be about to go through, so you are able to get their opinions and for them to explain what it’s all about to you at these events. It’s like an antique roadshow. If you are not there, you will be unsure of the product.
